God speaks to us because He wants to have a relationship with us.

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. Jeremiah 29:13–14 ESV

Test of Truth

If a word you receive troubles your heart, set it aside for a time. Sometimes it may make sense years later. But if it is clearly unscriptural, leave it behind.

When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, my spirit was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia. 2 Corinthians 2:12–13 ESV

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31–32

Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. Proverbs 8:34

Ways God Speaks to Us

“If you are too busy to spend a little time with God each day in personal prayer and the reading of the Word then you are busier than God intends you to be.” -Billy Graham

In the ordinary, mundane rhythms of life, God still desires to speak to us. The key to recognizing His voice is choosing to intentionally listen.

Through Scriptures

Through daily devotion and spiritual disciplines, we learn to become aware that God desires to speak to us even in the most mundane parts of everyday life, constantly inviting us into conversation. What He desires most is relationship. This is the original purpose and design for which God created us.

1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down

and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Psalms 139: 1-6 ESV
