Difference between Men and Women

In Genesis 2, the word used for “helper” is עֵזֶר כְּנֶגְדּוֹ (ezer kenegdo).

This phrase is often misunderstood in English, so it is worth breaking down carefully.

1. The Hebrew Meaning

Hebrew Transliteration Literal Meaning Nuance
עֵזֶר ezer help / aid / strong support not servant; describes powerful aid
כְּנֶגְדּוֹ kenegdo corresponding to / equal to / “face-to-face with” like a counterpart, a match, “alongside and opposite”

“Ezer kenegdo” does not mean “assistant” or “junior helper.”

It means a counterpart who supplies strength the man does not possess alone.

2. Same Word Used for God

The word ezer is primarily used of God Himself in the Old Testament.

Examples:

If ezer implied inferiority, Scripture would never apply it to God.

So the Hebrew picture is not of a subordinate assistant, but of a strong ally, a rescuer, one who supplies what is lacking.
